Ranked #1 in northern New England by the Washington Post in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2017, John Bapst School is a private, non-religious day and boarding school serving 500 boys and girls in grades 9-12. Applicants are accepted into all four grades.
Featuring a caring school community in the small, safe city of Bangor (city population 33,000), John Bapst serves day students (86%) from 30 towns and cities in Maine and boarding students (14%) from foreign countries like China (7.8%), Korea, Vietnam, Japan, India, Germany, Singapore, South Africa and UK.
John Bapst is accredited by the NEASC and is a member of NAIS, TABS and Enrollment Management Association, formerly SSATB (Secondary SAT Board). The staff includes 45 teachers, 2 college counselors, and 10 on-campus houseparents. Headmaster Mel MacKay, with degrees from Harvard and the University of North Carolina, is in his 12th year. In recent years, graduates have attended many top universities, including Ivy League as Harvard, Yale, and Stanford. Art and music graduates studying at Pratt, Parsons, the School for Visual Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Berklee College of Music. The school's strong technology program includes coding, cyber-security, robotics, and engineering. International students have captained teams in math, tennis, basketball, and chess. John Bapst has a strong AP program (20 courses taught on campus) and a culture that encourages students to join in American school life through drama, Model UN, Key Club (for community service), sports, and many other opportunities.
